breastfeeding with implants

Definitely, many of you will be wondering … Do breast implants affect breastfeeding? Which are the effects implants can have on pregnancy? Will the baby be able to breastfeed daily despite the implants? And it makes, absolutely, sense if you want to ask your doctor for anything that is related to your health and especially your baby’s health. We are sure that you are going to have a lot of questions concerning this issue. The short answer on these? Yes, you can breastfeed despite implants.

Research has shown that women who have breast implants are not excluded from breastfeeding. A recent study measured the amount of silicone in breast milk in women with and without implants, indicating no significant difference (Note: This study only measured silicone implants). The amount of silicone in breast milk of a woman with implants was actually much lower than the silicone that can be found in the common or regular cow’s milk. Another study that took place in Argentina compared the success and currency rates on breastfeeding women with and without implants. The study showed that there was no significant difference in the success and completion of breastfeeding. However, women without implants were able to breastfeed much more often than the others did.

“Breast implants have no effect on pregnancy or breastfeeding. If a woman with breast implants chooses to breastfeed, she simply does it in the same way as any other woman does. This is true for both silicone and saline implants” pointed out Dr. Lara Devgan, a plastic surgeon specializing in the recovery of patients with cancer.

Research and experts show an encouraging and enhanced direction for women with breast implants. Clearly you can try it! But, certainly, consult your doctor and surgeon first.
