Hydrosalpinx is called the condition in which the woman’s fallopian tubes are blocked and filled with fluid. There are several causes accused for this condition and the symptoms may vary depending on the woman each time. Some women do not have specific symptoms, however, the hydrosalpinx can have a serious impact on their fertility.

SYMPTOMS

  1. Abdominal and pelvic pain
  2. Unusual vaginal secretion

Usually the hydrosalpinx is an aftereffect of salpingitis or of an inflammation in the surrounding area. When there is an inflammation in the fallopian tubes, the woman may experience symptoms such as abdominal pain, pain during the intercourse or even fever. However, in many cases the symptoms of such an inflammation are mild and not perceived by the woman, so the diagnosis of the hydrosalpinx occurs when the woman has difficulty getting pregnant.

DIAGNOSIS

The diagnosis of whether or not there is an hydrosalpinx can be underwent by the following methods:

  1. Hysterosalpingography: A procedure in which saline and sterile air pass through a woman’s cervix and into the uterus. Then, an ultrasound is used to examine the reproductive organs and to see if there is any blockage or blockage in the uterus and genitals.
  2. Laparoscopy: This is a surgical procedure that allows direct examination and complete control of women’s internal genitalia (ovaries, uterus, fallopian tubes).

CAUSES AND RISK FACTORS

There are various and different reasons why an hydrosalpinx can occur. The most common causes are:

  1. Sexually Transmitted Infections (STDs)
  2. Endometriosis
  3. Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)
  4. Pruritus appendicitis
  5. Abdominal Surgery Intervention

When an area of the body suffers from injury, the body rapidly transfers inflammatory cells to the site as part of an immune response. In a phallic tube, inflammation and healing can cause fimbria (ring projections at the end of the fallopian tube) and eventual closure of the tube of the fallopian tube.

HYDROSALPINX AND FERTILITY

During a pregnancy, the egg travels from an ovary along the oviduct to the uterus. During this journey the tube with some small movements / contractions moves the egg from the ovary to the uterus. In a potential hydrosalpinx and because of the fluid trapped in the fallopian tube, the egg can not pass through it, as the fallopian tube does not work.

However, if only one of the two fallopian tubes is blocked, there is still possibility of a natural conception as the egg from the other ovary will still be able – through the healthy tube – to reach the uterus.

TREATMENT AND MANAGEMENT of an Hydrosalpinx

The treatment of the hydrosalpinx depends on the patient’s history. In a woman who either wants to try to conceive naturally or she is about to undergo an assisted reproduction treatment and has an hydrosalpinx, her doctor will suggest that she undergoes Laparoscopy before starting IVF. The most accepted treatment modalities are laparoscopic removal of the hydrosalpinx or cutting of the uterine-like part (ligament of the fallopian tube). Many studies that have been published over the last 10 years show that the presence of an hydrosalpinx reduces the success rate of a conception by half and doubles the risk of miscarriages. The reason why this may happen is that the fluid in the hydrosalpinx goes back into the uterine cavity and can affect the survival and development of the fetus, or even the failure of implantation of the fetus into the uterine cavity.
