Hysteroscopy tests the inside part of the uterus; in other words it tests the intrauterine cavity. Proper functioning of the endometrium is particularly important not only for conceiving, but also for undergoing a healthy pregnancy. With the modern diagnostic and therapeutic methods, we can successfully address the factors that cause it to malfunction, and thus help couples fulfill their dream and deliver healthy children.
There are two types of Hysteroscopy, the diagnostic and the invasive. The diagnostic method is performed with the help of a 3mm special telescope (hysteroscope), inserted into the vaginal cavity through the vagina and the cervix. This method is well tolerated and can be done without sedation or with light anaesthesia. However, the invasive method is different, performed with either a local or light anesthesia and a 5 or 10 mm telescope is usually used. With hysteroscopy, the endometrium is examined with greater reliability than any other method (transvaginal ultrasound, CT scan, hysterosalpingography). Diagnostic Hysteroscopy is applied to a wide variety of gynecological problems, such as polyps or fibroids in the uterine cavity, in the anatomical investigation of the shape of the woman’s womb cavity in cases of infertility, miscarriages, failed extracorporeal attempts, menstrual disorders and post-climacteric bleeding.
On the other hand, invasive Hysteroscopy helps in the cross-section of adhesions or diaphragm, in the removal of polyps or fibroids, in metrorrhagic problems, when removing foreign body from the intrauterine cavity, and is extremely useful in the prevention and early diagnosis of endometrial cancer or endometrial hyperplasia .
Hysteroscopy is not initially necessary if salpingography and vaginal ultrasound do not show any problems and in case there is no history of uterine surgery. However, if there are queries or previous incomplete cycles and miscarriages, then Hysteroscopy is recommended before the woman undergoes fertility treatment or effort for physical conception. In case something is found, immediate surgical treatment is performed.
